I want to do a video around the 75th Anniversary in the raid on Bruneval - the first operation by the parachute regiment. This is because I have long had an interest in the parachute regiment and documentary-style videos, and this would fulfil both interests at once.
- Why do you want to complete the project you have chosen?
To gain experience and knowledge in the field I’m most interested in pursuing as a career - video production.
- What do you hope to gain from it?
Understanding of the production process, the knowledge of each stage and how to complete the jobs that are expected in those roles, and which roles I prefer.
- Why do you think it is an interesting area to research?
I have been interested in WW2 and the paratroopers for a long time, and with the 75th anniversary of a major event in their history coming, I think it would be interesting to see the effect it still has on the Regiment.
- What sort of secondary sources do you think you will access?
Footage of paratroopers from WW2 and statistics and other info about the event and the paratroopers.
- What sort of primary research do you think you will need to complete?
Footage of Bruneval now, possibly with reenactment footage and interviews with members of the Parachute Regiment. Also, animation and SFX in the form of maps and movements could be used to explain information more clearly.
- Why do you think the project is useful to any future career or study plans you have?
Because video production is a field I am interested in pursuing, and being able to work in all parts of production would allow me to decide which area I’m most interested in, and so which one I want to pursue as a career.
For my Extended Project, I'm intending to do a documentary based around the 75th anniversary on the first operation the Parachute Regiment undertook - the raid on Bruneval, France.

I want to do my project based around this topic because I have long been interested in war documentaries, especially about WW2, and the fact that I am also interested in the Parachute Regiment specifically means this would be a project that fits my interests well. In addition, the path I am most interested in pursuing is making narrative film/TV products, and I think that this subject has the potential to have a narrative. Although creating and building on this potential is more difficult than making a purely narrative film, I think the challenge and the topic will allow me to improve my skills in video production more than making just a narrative product.
From this project, I am hoping to improve my skills in video production as a whole, as that is the career path I am most interested in taking. However, I am most interested in improving and building up my editing skills, especially using editing techniques to create a narrative or meaning for the audience, so this is the skill I am most looking to improve with this project.
I think this is an interesting area to research because it would show the story and progression of one of the most important parts of the British Army in WW2, and looking at how they have changed since then would be very interesting, especially because they have their 75th anniversary in February.
For this project, I expect I will access footage of the Parachute Regiment from WW2 - present, to show progression of the regiment and the role they played in WW2. Additionally, any documentaries created around the topic or similar topics would be of use to me - to find more information, techniques to create the product and possible contacts for the product.
My own research would consist of finding people to interview - veterans, the Regiment itself and historians would all be good possibilities to follow. Also, finding footage of various events in the Regiment's history would also be required as part of the project.
I believe that this project will help me gain experience in video production as a whole, and as this is the path I want to take for a career, this would be very useful. The most experience I believe will be for video editing, which I am looking to specialise in, which again would be useful for a future career.
